Corey Payne graduated in 2012 from St. Mary’s College of Maryland with a degree in chemistry. After this, he completed a master’s program also at St. Mary’s College, majoring in secondary science education. Corey’s master’s thesis focused on improving the representation and success of traditionally under-served groups in the science fields. He began teaching high school science in Anne Arundel County in the suburbs of Baltimore City. He was a teacher intern in the forest ecology lab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center in 2015, and that summer he also completed the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s environmental literacy program. In 2016, Corey relocated to Florida and began his doctoral studies in science education at the University of Florida. He is working on a grant with a goal of increasing the retention of underrepresented groups in undergraduate engineering programs.
