Longge (Andrea) Wang is from Beijing, China. She is a junior at Rutgers Preparatory School in Somerset, New Jersey. She attended the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment during the summer of 2016. She enjoyed her time with the students and faculty members at WYSE. In her high school, Andrea is an active leader of Environmental Club. She is also the technology editor of school newspaper. In her spare time, Andrea likes horseback riding and reading. She hopes to change the environmental condition of wild animals and desires the world to become more conservation-minded. Andrea is thankful that WYSE allows her to meet lots of great people.

Haley is a junior at Millbury Jr. Sr. High School in Millbury, Massachusetts. She attended the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment during the summer of 2016 and not only had the time of her life, but also helped fuel her passion for the environment. Haley is currently the Vice President of the Environmental Council at her school and has been on her school’s Envirothon team for the past 2 years. She loves being in nature, hiking, canoeing and observing the different animals and insects she finds along the way. When she graduates high school, she plans on going to college to major in Environmental Science and minor in Conservation.

Ted van den Beemt is a sophomore at the Friends School at Baltimore in Baltimore, Maryland, and attended the 2016 WYSE. His favorite subjects include astronomy and environmental science. He is the founder of the Astronomy Club at his school as well as a member of the Green Club, Robotics Club, and the Debate Team. He also owns a website, Space Science 365. After high school, Ted hopes to study astronomy and rocketry, and to find ways to use these fields to help the environment. He is very happy to continue his involvement in the WYSE program.

Tolani Taylor

Tolani Taylor is a senior at Willingboro High School in Willingboro, New Jersey. She is involved in a variety of activities at school including the debate team, community service club, Math National Honor Society, soccer, and plenty of others. She loves to read, travel, and spend time with family and friends and has an unconditional love for environmental science. Tolani has been researching environmental issues in the world as well as alternatives that could be used to combat climate change throughout her life. Her attendance at WYSE 2016 elevated her passion towards the environment because it opened up her eyes to how resolving environmental issues are intertwined with so many other factors. During her time at WYSE, she met some incredible people from all over the country and was exposed to a variety of fields within environmental science, such as microbiology, geology, and hydrology. Tolani is on a mission to make a difference in this world as an environmentalist and being a part of the WYSE 2017 Youth Advisory Board plays an integral part in her journey.

Jade Sweeney

Jade is a junior at White Oak High School in Jacksonville, NC, where she is a member of Student2Student, Interact, Tri-M, and as Secretary of Green Team. She is also a leader for the White Oak Marching Vikings where she plays clarinet. Last year she was a member of the pit orchestra for White Oak’s musical production of “The Addams Family”. Outside of school she volunteers with Jacksonville Youth Council, H.A.R.M.O.N.Y and her community’s Christmas Cheer program. Jade is set to graduate in 2018 and hopes to pursue a degree in engineering. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, learning new instruments and spending time with her friends.

Olivia Slack

Junior Faculty Advisor

Olivia Slack is a freshman at Meredith College in Raleigh, North Carolina. She is double-majoring in Political Science (with a Public Affairs concentration) and Interpersonal Communication and double-minoring in English and Environmental Sustainability. At Meredith, Olivia is involved with student government and is also the Features Editor for the college newspaper, The Meredith Herald, and Poetry Editor for the college literary journal, The Colton Review. After graduation, Olivia plans to attend law school and eventually become involved in government in order to better advocate for the rights of both humans and the environment. Olivia attended WYSE in 2016 and was a summer intern in 2017. The experience truly changed her life forever, as it made her aware of her passion for politics and policy. She is so excited to be able to help make WYSE 2019 as amazing of an experience for the delegates as WYSE 2016 was for her!

Freya Patel

Junior Faculty Advisor

Freya Patel is a rising sophomore majoring in Biology and Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her free time, Freya enjoys reading fiction novels and she aspires to one day become a zoologist and work in the field of animal conservation. During high school, Freya was dual enrolled at Central Piedmont Community College and graduated in 2017 with an Associates in Biological Sciences. Freya attended WYSE as a delegate in 2016 and as an intern in 2017. She is excited to return as a Junior Faculty Advisor for WYSE 2018 and looks forward to meeting the new delegates.

Andrew Nestor

Junior Faculty Advisor

Andrew is a previous attendee and intern for the WYSE conference from West Chester, Pennsylvania, but is currently a freshman attending the University of Delaware, majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in Journalism. He previously graduated from a small private high school for kids with social and mental disabilities and worked as a teacher’s assistant in many capacities helping to work with high schoolers and middle schoolers. Andrew is a member of the National Honors Society and has held a job working in customer service in his hometown since his junior year of high school.
