John Cook

JOHN COOK

Research Asst. Professor, Center for Climate Change Communication, George Mason University

John Cook is a research assistant professor at the Center for Climate Change Communication at George Mason University, researching cognitive science. In 2007, he founded Skeptical Science, a website which won the 2011 Australian Museum Eureka Prize for the Advancement of Climate Change Knowledge and 2016 Friend of the Planet Award from the National Center for Science Education. John co-authored the college textbooks Climate Change: Examining the Facts with Weber State University professor Daniel Bedford. He was also a coauthor of the textbook Climate Change Science: A Modern Synthesis and the book Climate Change Denial: Heads in the Sand. In 2013, he published a paper analysing the scientific consensus on climate change that has been highlighted by President Obama and UK Prime Minister David Cameron. In 2015, he developed a Massive Open Online Course at the University of Queensland on climate science denial, that has received over 25,000 enrollments.

John earned his PhD in Cognitive Science at the University of Western Australia in 2016.

Junior Faculty Advisor

Charlotte Joannidis is a rising sophomore at George Mason University. She is from northern New Jersey. She is majoring in Environmental Science and is very interested in wastewater and water pollution. At GMU, she is in the Honors College and is a Mason Ambassador. Charlotte attended WYSE as a delegate in 2017 and is very excited to be a Junior Faculty Advisor for the first time this year!

Allison Wells

ALLISON WELLS

Director of Logistics, Washington Scholars Program

Allison Wells is the Assistant Director of Events for the Office of Admissions at George Mason University, and the Director of Logistics for the Washington Scholars Program. Allison joined the team in May of 2019 and has spent the last two summers supporting and leading the Washington Scholars Programs. She is a lover of all things logistics, and the summers quickly became her favorite time of year. She earned her B.S. in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Grand Valley State University in 2019. In her free time, Allison looks forward to spending time outdoors, being with friends, and traveling.

Kelly Discount

KELLY DISCOUNT

Lead Associate, Security Education and Engagement, Booz Allen Hamilton

Kelly Discount, Certified Energy Manager, has more than 19 years of emergency management experience in both the private sector as well as at the federal, state, and local government levels. Her expertise spans comprehensive emergency management program development and implementation, strategic planning, mission assignments and mutual aid, grant and fund management, and test, training and exercises (TTE). Ms. Discount has undergraduate degrees in Environmental Studies and Communications. While attaining her MBA in 2009, she authored “Adaptive Leadership in Emergency Management” as her Direct Research Project. She was inducted into the inWEM Hall of Fame for founding EMPOWER in 2011, and her team won the DRI International Award of Excellence for “Response and Recovery of the Year” in 2012. From 2010-2017, Ms. Discount worked with Booz Allen Hamilton’s Business Assurance Office (BAO) where she managed the U.S. Local Office Program, establishing standards, coordinating the maintenance of emergency plans and procedures as well as systems and tools used by local leadership during emergencies, and mapping offices, client sites, and employees. Her experience in developing and conducting training lead to her transition to the Security Education and Engagement (SEE) Team in 2017. Her work on the SEE Team includes planning and logistics support for guest speaker events, and messaging and employee engagement on various security topics. She speaks frequently to international audiences on topics such as adaptive leadership, data visualization, emergency program metrics, and involving youth in preparedness. Ms. Discount co-leads the Certified Emergency Management (CEM) Study Group and lends her expertise in the field of Emergency Management to others whenever possible. Ms. Discount lives outside Washington, D.C. with her husband and three children.

Principal Data Scientist and Executive Advisor, Booz Allen Hamilton

Dr. Kirk Borne is the Principal Data Scientist and an Executive Advisor at the global technology and consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton based in McLean, Virginia. In those roles, he focuses on applications of data science, data analytics, data management, machine learning, artificial intelligence, modeling, and simulation across a wide variety of disciplines. He also provides leadership and mentoring to multi-disciplinary teams of data scientists and analysts. In addition, he consults with numerous external organizations, industries, agencies, and partners in the use of large data repositories and machine learning for discovery, decision support, and innovation.

Writer, Comedian, Molecular Biologist

One of the most popular science comedians in the country, Adam has appeared on the Food Network, the Travel Channel, the Weather Channel, Discovery International, PBS, NPR, and hosts Outrageous Acts of Science on the Science Channel.

When he’s not working in the lab or writing his monthly humor column in the otherwise respectable journal Science, Adam travels to conferences and universities (in >30 states and 6 countries so far) to have fun with–and make fun of–science.

Kalea Perez

Kalea Perez is a rising sophomore at the College of Charleston from Chantilly, VA. She is studying Communication with a minor in studio art and is involved in many activities throughout campus, including the outdoors club, fashion organization, and is a sister in Chi Omega. Kalea first attended the conference in 2017, and later worked on the Youth Advisory Board the following year. She is so excited to meet, work with, and serve all of the new youth correspondents and know you all will have the time of your lives here!

Riley Noyes is finishing her time at Northern Virginia Community College, and plans to seek a Management degree upon graduation this year. She will be graduating with a General Studies A.S. with a concentration is Business Information Technology Career Studies. Outside of her education, Riley has an affinity for the event industry. She is an assistant at Anne Kelley Events and the Operations Manager of Repeatable DJ and Photo Booth Services. Through both of these positions she works with the planning and the service aspect of events. Riley enjoys watching movies, playing sports with friends, and exploring new parts of D.C.

Tess is a rising sophomore at George Mason University who is currently majoring in Environment and Sustainability Studies with a minor in Visual Art. As a freshman Tess was involved with the Sustainability LLC on campus where she spent a lot of time volunteering with the Office of Sustainability working in the Potomac Heights Vegetable Garden and the President’s Park Hydroponic Greenhouse. Off campus, Tess found her happy place at Merrifield Garden Center where she helps the community learn about everything from flowers to vegetables. When she’s not working on sustainability related projects you can find Tess lounging in a coffee shop reading the latest New York Times best seller.

Junior Faculty Advisor

Megan is a sophomore at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry majoring in Environmental Biology. Her goal is to attend graduate school and work with the giant sequoia trees in California. Megan attended WYSE in 2017 and it really helped her decide that she wanted to help preserve our environment. During her free time she enjoys hiking, camping, running, and drinking coffee. Megan is really looking forward to meeting the delegates, and she cant wait for WYSE 2019!
